Managing Anxiety

Anxiety is a feeling of apprehension caused by anticipation of an ill-defined threat or danger that is not realistically based. It's characterised by feelings of worry, nervousness, or fear that are strong enough to interfere with one's daily activities. There are different types of anxiety disorders, including generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), panic disorder, and social anxiety disorder.



Normal and Abnormal Anxiety

Happy events like getting a promotion or celebrating an important milestone can bring up anxiety and all of this is just part of being human.

However, it becomes a problem when the anxiety becomes abnormally severe, pervasive, persistent, irrational and handicapping. As a result, it interferes with social, occupational or other important areas of functioning.

  • Deep Breathing Exercises: Techniques such as diaphragmatic breathing can help calm your nervous system.

  • Physical Activity: Regular exercise such as attending Reformer Pilates classes can help reduce anxiety by releasing endorphins and other natural chemicals that improve mood.

  • Adequate Sleep: Ensuring you get enough sleep is crucial for managing anxiety. Develop a regular sleep routine.

  • Limiting Caffeine and Alcohol: Both can exacerbate anxiety symptoms.

  • Medication: In some cases, medication may be prescribed by a healthcare provider to help manage symptoms.

  • Social Support: Talking to friends, family, or support groups can provide emotional support and practical advice.
